A first edition, first printing of Clowns’ Houses by Edith Sitwell, published by Blackwell, Oxford in 1918. A very good book/pamphlet, one of 750 copies printed. Wear to the edges of the boards, some pushing and a tear to the head of the spine and some pushing at the foot, with worn label to the spine, beautifully designed in the Arts and Crafts style. No inscriptions whatsoever.

Clowns’ Houses by Edith Sitwell is her second collection of poetry, a poem of surreal imagery depicting a haunting landscape where clowns reside. Their homes, paradoxically, embody both joy and melancholy, with “tears on their flutes” and “laughter round their breasts.” Sitwell crafts a surreal atmosphere where laughter and sorrow intertwine, inviting readers to contemplate the complexity of human emotions hidden behind the facade of mirth.
