First edition, first printing of Something in the Air by H. E. Bates, aka Flying Officer “X”, published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1944. This is a near fine copy, the blue cloth bound boards with silver titles to the front board and spine, some bumping to the head and foot of the spine with slight discolouration, the text blocks with minor browning, free from internal inscriptions, internally clean and bright. The unclipped wrapper with slight fading to the spine, chips to the head and foot of the spine and to the knuckles of the front and rear flap folds.

This volume collects the wartime flying stories of H E Bates, writing anonymously as Flying Officer “X”. Something in the Air offers a riveting account of aerial combat during World War II. Written with gripping detail, it captures the intensity and peril of air warfare, drawing readers into the cockpit alongside the author. With vivid descriptions and personal insights, Flying Officer “X” provides a firsthand perspective on the challenges and triumphs of fighter pilots in the skies. The book is a compelling tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the air.
