A first edition, first printing of Mister Roberts by Thomas Heggen, published by Houghton Mifflin, Boston in 1946. A near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, boards bound in publisher’s buff cloth with dark blue titling to the front board and spine, some toning to the upper edge of front and back boards, similarly to the head of the spine and top edge of text block, pushing to the upper corners. In a very good unclipped wrapper with substantial chipping loss to spine tips, and open tear and several closed tears to the spine, chipping to the knuckles of front and rear flap folds similarly with closed tears throughout the folds, bumping and chipping to upper and lower edges of front and rear panels, some fading to the spine. Illustrated by Samuel Hanks Bryant.

Mister Roberts by Thomas Heggen is a World War II novel set aboard a U.S. Navy cargo ship in the Pacific. It follows Lieutenant Doug Roberts, who longs for combat duty but is stuck on a dull supply ship under the command of a petty, tyrannical captain. Through humour and camaraderie, the crew copes with monotony and frustration. The novel explores themes of duty, sacrifice and morale, highlighting the quiet heroism of those far from the front lines.
