A first Folio Society edition, first printing of The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy, published by The Folio Society, London in 1991, with an introduction by Tim Heald, illustrated with wood engravings by Peter Reddick. A very fine book free from internal inscriptions, boards bound in publishers original brown cloth, with gilt titling on a light tan cartouche to the spine and light tan debossed corn dolly to the front panel, text blocks are bright and crisp with brown top-stain and with cartographic endpapers. In a light tan paper bound slip case.

The Woodlanders by Thomas Hardy is a novel set in the rural village of Little Hintock, exploring themes of love, social class and the clash between tradition and change. It centres on Grace Melbury, who returns home educated and refined, complicating her relationship with the devoted woodsman Giles Winterborne. As Grace is drawn to the charming but fickle Dr. Edred Fitzpiers, the story unfolds with emotional depth, highlighting Hardy’s signature tragic realism and deep connection to nature.
