In full: ‘49 Walham Grove (typo) London SW6 12th April 1984 – Dear Mr Jones, Thank you for your kind letter. The only books about my work are the Catalogue of the Serpentine exhibition, available from the Gallery at £3.00 and the Catalogue of an exhibition that I had at the Waddington Gallery en-titled (typo) Studies From Nature about a year agowhich has a short text and a few plates and is I think still available from the Gallery at 4 Cork Street, London W1 at the price of £1.00. Lawrence Gowing (1918–1991) was a British painter, art historian and influential teacher. He is known for thoughtful figurative paintings, still lifes and portraits, often reflecting his deep knowledge of art history. Gowing taught at leading institutions including the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal College of Art. Knighted for services to art, he also wrote important studies on artists such as Vermeer and Turner, shaping modern understanding of classical painting.
