Robert Graves – I, Claudius [with] Claudius The God – First UK Editions 1934
£3,750.00
A pair of first editions, first printings published by Arthur Barker in 1934. ‘I, Claudius’ – a very good book without inscriptions, some foxing to the page edges – a few marks to the cloth. In a very good wrapper which has a little chipping to the spine tips and corners. Not price clipped. Some edgewear and some browning to the spine. ‘Claudius The God’ – a very good book with some foxing to the page edges. No inscriptions. In a very good unclipped wrapper with NONE of the usual browning to the spine – Spotting across the folds and flaps and to the rear panel – crease to spine – a lovely example.
‘I, Claudius’ retains the wrap-around band (creased in places), declaring the book to be winner of both the Hawthornden and James Tait Black Memorial Prizes.
“I, Claudius” by Robert Graves is a captivating historical novel that immerses readers in the tumultuous world of ancient Rome. Through the eyes of Claudius, a stuttering and seemingly insignificant member of the imperial family, the novel unfolds as a gripping tale of intrigue, betrayal, and power struggles within the Roman Empire. Claudius narrates the story of his family’s rise to power, chronicling the reigns of the emperors Augustus, Tiberius, and Caligula, as well as the machinations of his own family members, including the infamous Emperor Nero. Graves’ meticulous research and vivid storytelling bring ancient Rome to life, offering readers a richly detailed portrait of the era’s politics, culture, and societal norms. “I, Claudius” is not only a gripping historical drama but also a profound exploration of the complexities of human nature and the corrupting influence of absolute power.
