A first edition, first printing of The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, published by Cape, London in 1977. A near fine book signed by a previous owner in blue ink to the front free end paper, lightly cocked boards bound in publishers original dark blue cloth with gilt titling to the spine, rear panel a little rub worn, bumping to lower corner of front board, bumping to upper and lower edge of rear panel, light spotting to top edge of text block, evidence of erased inscriptions to front and rear paste downs, similarly both with small damp stains to lower corners. In a very good unclipped wrapper with fading to the spine, chipping to the spine tips and knuckles of the front and rear flap folds, some pushing to the upper edge of front and rear panel, some light internal damp staining. Jacket design by Susan Shields.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald Dahl is a novella about a wealthy man, Henry Sugar, who discovers a manuscript detailing a yogi’s ability to see without using his eyes. Fascinated, Henry trains himself to develop the same power, initially intending to use it to cheat at gambling. However, as his abilities grow, he undergoes a moral transformation, using his new found skill to win large sums of money for charity. The story explores themes of greed, transformation and altruism.
