A fine autograph letter from Sir Nikolaus Pevsner to E. Stanley Jones Esq, 96 William Way, Letchworth, Herts, dated 24th January 1973, typed on ivory headed paper – ‘Birkbeck College, University of London, Department of History of Art, Emeritus Professor Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, 01 405 2520, 12 Bloomsbury Square, London, WC1B 3QU’ – with signature in blue ink, a central horizontal fold and two vertical folds, some bumping to lower edge.
In full: ‘Dear Mr Jones, I think the simplest suggestion I can make in reply to your letter of January 20th is that for architecture from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day the best book is H. R. Hitchcock’s Architecture: 19th and 20th Centuries in the Pelican History of Art series. Similarly, for painting and sculpture from 1800-1880 and from 1880 to the present day are two other volumes in the Pelican History of Art, the earlier one by F. Novotny: Painting and Sculpture in Europe 1780-1880, and the more recent one by G.H. Hamilton: Painting and Sculpture in Europe 1880-1940. I cannot unfortunately be certain whether all three of them are in print, but I think so. Yours sincerely Sir Nikolaus Pevsner.’
Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902–1983) was a German-born British art and architectural historian, best known for creating The Buildings of England series. After emigrating from Nazi Germany in the 1930s, he became a major interpreter of British architecture, combining scholarship with accessible writing. He taught at Birkbeck College, University of London, where he later became Emeritus Professor of History of Art, and his influence on architectural history remains profound.
