Lennard Bickel – This Accursed Land – Uncorrected Proof Copy 1977
£35.00
An uncorrected proof copy of This Accursed Land by Lennard Bickel, published by Macmillan, London in 1977. A near fine copy, with toning to the spine, bumping to the head of the spine, some shelf wear to front and rear soft panels, spotting to the top edge of text block and small stain to bottom edge.
This Accursed Land by Lennard Bickel recounts explorer Sir Douglas Mawson’s harrowing 1912–13 Antarctic expedition. Declining Robert Scott’s journey, Mawson led a three-man husky team along the uncharted eastern coast. After losing a team-mate and supplies, he became stranded 320 miles from base, surviving on poisoned dog meat. Battling exhaustion, extreme cold, illness and crevasses, he crawled back alone. Bickel draws on unpublished journals to vividly capture this staggering tale of endurance and survival amidst brutal isolation.
