This Accursed Land by Lennard Bickel recounts explorer Sir Douglas Mawson’s harrowing 1912–13 Antarctic expedition. Declining Robert Scott’s journey, Mawson led a three-man husky team along the uncharted eastern coast. After losing a team-mate and supplies, he became stranded 320 miles from base, surviving on poisoned dog meat. Battling exhaustion, extreme cold, illness and crevasses, he crawled back alone. Bickel draws on unpublished journals to vividly capture this staggering tale of endurance and survival amidst brutal isolation.
