Description
First edition, first printing of ‘Empire of the Sun’. Published by Gollancz in London, 1984. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper has some slight creasing to the top edge and is so slightly bumped on the spine. This is the first state, correctly showing just the Greene and Carter reviews on the rear panel. It has been neatly price clipped. The boards are free from notable wear and the text blocks show spotting as well as to the endpaper and pastedowns. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in very good condition.
Awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Like Ballard’s earlier short story “The Dead Time” (published in the anthology Myths of the Near Future), it is essentially fiction but draws extensively on Ballard’s experiences in World War II. The name of the novel is derived from the etymology of the name for Japan.
