A first edition, first printing of A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch, published by Chatto and Windus, London in 1961. A near fine book with a previous owners name in blue ink to the front free end paper, binding slightly cocked, light pushing and fading to the spine tips, single bump to lower edge of front board, light staining to rear board, toning and foxing to the text block and foxing to prelims. In a very good unclipped wrapper with chipping to the spine tips, knuckles of front and rear flap folds, several small holes to hinge of rear flap fold, closed tears to lower edge of front panel, upper edge of rear panel and chipping to lower edge of front and rear flaps, with toning to the rear panel, spotting and toning internally.

A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch is a darkly comic novel of love, betrayal and self-deception. Set in London, it follows Martin Lynch-Gibbon, whose seemingly stable life unravels after his mistress and wife pursue new entanglements. As relationships collapse, shifting loyalties reveal hidden desires and hypocrisies. Murdoch explores freedom, morality and the irrational nature of passion with sharp wit. The novel’s ironic tone and unexpected twists make it a satirical examination of modern love and identity.
