First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1981. This is a very near fine copy. The dust wrapper is beautifully illustrated with a watercolour by Turner. It has not been price clipped and shows the original £5.50 only net price. The spine is slightly sunned and there is very slight soiling to the top right-hand corner of the rear panel, which is visible on the inside cover. The boards are free from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are bright and white throughout, aside from some slight foxing to the top edge. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in very near fine condition.

The authors second novel. It is set in an unnamed city. Harold Pinter adapted it as a screenplay for a film directed by Paul Schrader in 1990, which starred Rupert Everett, Christopher Walken, Helen Mirren and Natasha Richardson.
