A first edition, first printing of ‘The History of Mr Polly’ by H. G. Wells published by Nelson in 1910. A very good copy – still with the white background to the spine which is rare, as most examples saw the background scratch off. Rubbed to extremities. Dustiness to the top edge.
Written when Wells was moving beyond the scientific romances he was most famous for. It tells the story of Alfred Polly, a draper and small shopkeeper trapped in a dull marriage and a failing business, and it draws heavily on Wells’s own early experience in the drapery trade and on lower-middle-class English life.
