A first edition, first printing of Men Like Gods by H. G. Wells, published by Cassell in 1923. A very good book with a previous owner’s inscription in black ink to the front free end paper, boards bound in publisher’s original green cloth with debossed title framed by a foliate border to the front board, tarnished gilt titling to the spine with similar debossed foliate border, bumping to top edge of rear board, boards a little rub-worn, toning to the text block with some chipping to the fore-edge, ghosting to the front free end paper and light spotting to the prelims.

Men Like Gods by H. G. Wells follows ordinary Britons transported to Utopia, a parallel world where advanced science, personal liberty and co-operative living have eliminated war and poverty. Through clashes between Earthlings’ habits and Utopians’ ideals, H. G. Wells explores freedom, responsibility and social evolution. The novel critiques contemporary politics while celebrating rational progress. As characters confront their own limitations, Wells uses the contrast to imagine how humanity might mature into a more harmonious, self-directed civilisation.
