A first edition, first printing of Edward Garnett by H. E. Bates, published by Max Parrish, London, in 1950, with eight plates in photogravure and three line illustrations. This is a near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, with some spotting and ghosting to the front and rear free end papers, the head and foot of the spine slightly pushed, text blocks with browning and minor spotting. The near fine mylar-sleeved wrapper price clipped, with browning and fading to the spine, with some browning throughout.

Edward Garnett, a central figure in English literary circles, influenced numerous writers, including H.E. Bates. Garnett was renowned for his insightful literary criticism and his role as a mentor to many emerging authors, providing guidance and support that shaped their careers. Bates particularly admired Garnett’s discerning eye and dedication to nurturing talent, considering him a significant influence on his own development as a writer.
