First edition, first printing. Published by Heinemann in London, 1955. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper is toned to the front and rear panels, with some mild handling marks to the rear panel. The top of the flaps are also majorly toned. It has not been price clipped and shows the original 13s 6d net price. There is a small previous owners inscription to the front fly leaf in pink ink in the date of publication. The boards are loose at the boards and the front fly leaf is slightly separated from the binding, as visible inside. The gilt titling is in tact and generally bright. Overall, this is a very good copy.
Narrated in the first person by journalist Thomas Fowler, the novel depicts the breakdown of French colonialism in Vietnam and early American involvement in the Vietnam War.
