First UK edition, first printing. Published by Faber & Faber, London, in 1998. This is a near fine (or better) copy. The dust wrapper is bright and clear; it has not been price clipped. The soft cover, strikingly illustrated, is without notable wear aside from very slight rubbing at the spine. The internals are generally clean but with some very slight toning to the edges. The text blocks are bright and white and free from foxing. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine (or better) condition.
Focusing on the rise of Ugandan President Idi Amin and his reign as dictator from 1971 to 1979, the novel, which interweaves fiction and historical fact, is written as the memoir of a fictional Scottish doctor in Amin’s employ. Foden’s novel received critical acclaim and numerous awards when it was published. In 2006, a loose eponymous film adaptation was released.
