A fine autograph letter from Clare Francis to E. Stanley Jones, dated 28th July 1981, on white Conquerer personalised writing paper – ‘Bywater Place, Walhampton, Lymington, Hampshire SO4 8SB’ – written in blue ink, with a central horizontal fold and two horizontal folds.

In full: ‘Dear Mr Stanley Jones,

Thank you for your letter – how kind of you to write. My books to date are three: –

Come Hell or High Water (in Sphere paperback)

Come Wind or Weather (ditto)

The Commanding Sea (hardback BBC + Pelham)

The first two books can be obtained cheaply in paperback but the third is still rather expensive, I fear. Again, thank you for your interest.

With best wishes,

Clare Francis.’

Clare Francis (born 1946) is a British novelist, journalist and former yachtswoman whose career spans both sport and literature. Before becoming a successful writer, she gained public attention as one of the first women to skipper yachts in major ocean races, including the Whitbread Round the World Race. She later turned to fiction and became known for thrillers and suspense novels. Her work often reflects themes of endurance, ambition and psychological tension, shaped by her adventurous life.
