A first Folio Society edition, first printing of Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock, published by The Folio Society, London in 1979, introduced by Marilyn Butler, drawings and wood engravings by Peter Forster. A very fine book free from internal inscriptions, purple cloth bound pictorial boards designed by Forster, gilt gothic titling to the spine, the text blocks are bright and crisp with purple top stain. In black paper bound slip case with gilt gothic title.

Nightmare Abbey by Thomas Love Peacock is a satirical gothic novel originally published in 1818. Set in a gloomy mansion, it humorously critiques the Romantic movement, especially figures like Byron, Shelley and Mary Shelley. The story follows Scythrop Glowry, a melancholic idealist caught in a love triangle, reflecting the excesses of Romantic idealism. With witty dialogue and eccentric characters, Peacock parodies gothic tropes and intellectual pretensions, blending comedy with clever literary allusions in a short, entertaining narrative.
