Anna Harriette Leonowens – The English Governess At The Siamese Court – First Folio Edition 1990
£30.00
A first Folio Society edition, first printing of The English Governess at the Siamese Court by Anna Harriette Leonowens, published by The Folio Society, London in 1980, introduced by Robin Duke, with illustrations from the first edition, engraved from photographs presented to the author by the King of Siam. A near fine book free from internal inscriptions, cloth bound boards with paper title cartouche to the front board, gilt titling to the spine with slight fading and bumping to the foot of the spine, the text blocks are bright and crisp with yellow top stain. In dove grey paper bound slip case showing signs of some shelf wear.
The English Governess at the Siamese Court by Anna Harriette Leonowens is a memoir recounting her experiences as a tutor to the children of King Mongkut of Siam (now Thailand) in the 1860s. The book offers a unique Western perspective on the royal court, culture and politics of Siam. Blending fact and personal interpretation, it became the basis for later adaptations like The King and I, shaping Western views of 19th century Thailand, despite historical inaccuracies.
