A first edition, first printing of ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans’ by Agatha Christie published by Collins [The Crime Club] in 1934. A very good/near fine book with one neat name to the front pastedown. Original orange boards with titles in black to front board and spine. Some light wear to the edges and spine tips and a little to the boards. No foxing whatsoever. In the supplied original dust wrapper which has benefitted from restoration to the spine and edges by one of the world’s leading paper conservators and present now as a very good example. The price of 7’6 net to the spine. Accompanied by the ‘Crime Club’ wrap-around band which has a neat repair to the folds. A rare 1930s Christie in the original dust wrapper and excessively scarce with the wrap-around band.

The novel follows Bobby Jones, a young man who discovers a dying stranger after a fall from a cliff. The man’s final words, “Why didn’t they ask Evans?”, spark Bobby’s curiosity, leading him and his friend, Lady Frances “Frankie” Derwent, into a dangerous investigation. As they unravel the truth, they face deception, murder attempts, and hidden identities. The novel combines Christie’s classic elements of suspense, clever plotting, and red herrings, with a focus on amateur sleuths rather than her famous detectives like Hercule Poirot.
