A set of James Clavell’s ‘Asia Saga’, all first edition, first printings published by Michael Joseph and Hodder and Stoughton between the years of 1963 to 1993. Consisting: ‘King Rat’: A near fine book without inscriptions in a near fine unclipped wrapper with a little wear to the head of the spine; ‘Tai-Pan’: A very good book with a previous owner’s name and date to the half-title page. In a very good unclipped wrapper with some internal repairs and some creasing and nicking to the edges and slight loss to the corners; ‘Shogun’: A near fine book without inscriptions in a near fine unclipped wrapper – no fading to the spine; ‘Noble House’: A near fine book without inscriptions in a near fine lightly spine faded dust wrapper; ‘Whirlwind’: A near fine book without inscriptions, in a near fine clipped wrapper lightly faded on the spine; ‘Gai-Jin’: A near fine book without inscriptions, in an unclipped wrapper with a little wear to the spine tips and one small nick to the foot of the front panel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the set of first editions has been offered for sale.
James Clavell’s “Asian Saga” is a captivating series of six novels spanning centuries and cultures. Beginning with “King Rat,” set in a World War II Japanese POW camp, and continuing with “Shōgun,” “Tai-Pan,” “Noble House,” “Whirlwind,” and “Gai-Jin,” the saga weaves intricate tales of power, politics, and cultural clashes. Clavell’s meticulous research immerses readers in historical landscapes, from feudal Japan to 19th-century Hong Kong and revolutionary Iran. The series intricately connects characters and themes across generations, offering a rich tapestry of Asian history, geopolitics, and human resilience. Each novel is a standalone masterpiece, collectively forming a panoramic exploration of the East.
