A near fine letter from Fiona Eakins, secretary to Yehudi Menuhin, to E. Stanley Jones Esq, dated 14th March 1979, typed on headed ivory writing paper – ‘2 The Grove (crossed out – 15 Pond Square typed in replacement), Highgate Village, London N6 8JH (8JH crossed out)’ – signed by Eakins in dark blue ink, with one central horizontal fold and a crease to the top left hand corner.
In full: ‘Dear Mr Jones I regret the delay in forwarding you a photograph signed by Mr Menuhin. Your letter arrived after he had left for the United States and he only returned to London this week. However, I now have the pleasure in enclosing this here – with with (sic) his compliments. I know that nothing would delight Mr Menuhin more than if you were kind enough to make a small donation to his very favourite charity – LIVE MUSIC NOW. I am enclosing a brochure which will explain the aims and objects of the project. Kind regards. Yours sincerely Fiona Eakins (Mrs) Secretary to Yehudi Menuhin Enclrs 14th March 1979.’
Yehudi Menuhin (1916–1999) was among the twentieth century’s supreme violinists, a prodigy whose artistry matured into a wider life as conductor, teacher and humanitarian. Born in New York, he made Britain central to his career and home life, at one point living at 15 Pond Square, Highgate Village. His correspondence also preserves the practical machinery behind the genius, including work handled by his long-serving secretary, Fiona Eakins, who supported Menuhin for twenty-four years with quiet devotion.
