Dark Materials – Philip Pullman

Consisting of Northern Lights (1995), The Subtle Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000) they have won numerous literary awards over the years including the Carnegie Medal, and the Whitbread Book Of The Year, and are now set to be released as a television series on a grand scale.

His Dark Materials is set in an alternative world where all humans have animal companions called dæmons, which are the manifestation of the human soul.
The series follows the life of young Lyra who is an orphan living with the scholars at Jordan College, Oxford. As in Pullman’s novel, Lyra discovers a dangerous secret that involves Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter. In her search for her missing friend, Lyra also uncovers a slew of kidnappings and its link to the mysterious substance called Dust.

Staring Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, Clarke Peters, Anne-Marie Duff, Lin-Manuel Miranda to name a few it has been co-produced by the BBC and HBO, and has been directed by Otto Bathurst whose previous work includes Black Mirror and Peaky Blinders for which he won a BAFTA.

Impressively a second season has already been commissioned without an episode of the first season even being screened.

With the first episode scheduled to be released on BBC1 at 8pm on November 3rd you can see the trailer for it below.
