Winston S. Churchill – The Second World War – First UK Editions 1948-54 [The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy]
£700.00
First editions, first printings. Published by Cassell between 1948 and 1954. The collection is in very good (or better) condition, and as each volume is in very similar condition, I shall described them as a whole. The dust wrappers have not been price clipped, with the first four showing the original 25s net price, and the latter two 30s net. There is some mild shelf wear to the top and tail edges. The spines are partially faded, though the titles on said ‘faded’ volumes remain legible. The boards are free from chips and marks and are all tight at the spine and sharp at the corners, though the larger volumes do have a slight lean. The text blocks are markedly bright and with only very slight foxing present. Each volume is free from previous owners inscriptions and internally clean. Overall, this is a very good (or better) set of a great collection.
“It was wholly appropriate that in 1953 Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature” (Keegan). Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century. It placed number one on the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century by National Review magazine.
