A first edition, first printing of ‘Grey Wethers’ published by Heinemann in 1923. A very good book with a little rubbing to the edges and to the corners. Some spotting internally and a little to the edges. No inscriptions but with a previous libris bookplate to the front pastedown which is a little scuffed – a very nice copy indeed, bound in grey boards. The author’s first novel.

A satirical novel examining post-World War I English society. It follows the Chanter family, whose members retreat into nostalgia, social pretence, and emotional inertia rather than confronting change. The title refers to castrated rams, symbolising sterility and stagnation. Through irony and sharp observation, Sackville-West critiques class rigidity, moral complacency, and the hollow rituals of the upper middle class.
