First edition, first printing, published by Oxford University Press, London, in 1956. This is a near fine copy with previous owner’s gift inscription and date in blue ink to the front pastedown, the text blocks are bright and crisp with slight stain to the bottom edge. The near fine original dust wrapper is unclipped, with one neat tape repair to the top spine tip internally and some chipping at the head of the spine and front and rear corners. A scarce first edition with dust jacket.

A captivating historical novel set in Viking-era Britain. The story revolves around the young Viking girl, Bjorn, and the Saxon boy, Frytha, who form an unlikely bond amidst the tumult of war and rivalry. As they navigate alliances and betrayals, they become embroiled in the struggle for power and survival. Sutcliff’s vivid prose and rich historical detail bring to life the epic clash between Viking raiders and Saxon defenders, creating a gripping tale of courage, friendship, and resilience.
