First UK edition, first printing of ‘The Machine-Gunners’. Published by Macmillan in London, 1975. This is a near fine (or better) copy. The bright pictorial, paper-covered boards are mostly clean throughout though with some slight creasing and wear at the corners. The internals are clean with the very sparse instance of spotting to the top edge. This copy is free from previous owners inscriptions and the text blocks are clean. In the near fine unclipped dust wrapper which is rare. Overall, this is a nearly fine copy of a fine children’s classic.

A children’s novel set during World War II in Tyneside, England. It follows a boy named Chas McGill, who discovers the wreck of a German bomber and steals its machine gun. With his friends, he builds a secret fortress, armed and ready to defend their town. The story explores themes of bravery, fear, and the blurred lines between childhood games and war’s grim reality, offering both adventure and moral reflection.
