A fine autograph letter from Robert Latham to Stanley Jones, dated 31st January 1978, typed on headed ivory writing paper – ‘Magdalene College, Cambridge CB3 0AG From R. C. Latham Pepys Librarian Telephone: (0223) 61543’ – with one horizontal and one vertical fold, signed in black ink.
In full: ‘Dear Mr Jones, How nice of you to write! I hope to get the Index to the printer by the end of this year; after that the printing, proof-reading and binding will take some time. Once that is off my hands I shall need about three years to write the Companion and correct the typescript. So perhaps the best guess is 1979 or 1980 for the Index and 1984 for the Companion. I always seem to be slower than I ought to be. But there are so many other things to be done too! Yours sincerely, Robert Latham.’
Robert Clifford Latham (1912–1995) was a British historian, editor and Pepys scholar. After teaching at King’s College London and Royal Holloway, he moved to Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1970, becoming Fellow and Pepys Librarian in 1972. There, he cared for Samuel Pepys’s great library and diary manuscripts. With William Matthews, Latham produced the definitive eleven-volume edition of The Diary of Samuel Pepys, a landmark of Restoration scholarship. He was later honoured as CBE and FBA.
