First edition, first printing. published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1983. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper has some mild wear to the top and tail of the spine, with some slight tearing to the top. There are handling marks to both panels, and slight rubbing at the edges. It has not been price clipped. The front flap is slightly foxed. There is a small previous owners inscription to the front pastedown in black ink. The previous owner has masterfully detailed the existing Quentin Blake illustrations, giving them a certain vivacity in watercolour. It is not every illustrations, but those on the title page and pages 8 and 11. The text blocks are slightly toned and foxed at the side and top edges. Overall, this is a very good copy of a fine collectable title with some fabulous custom detailing.

In 1983, the year it was published, The Witches won three awards: The New York Times Outstanding Books Award, The Federation of Children’s Book Groups Award and The Whitbread Award. A film version of the story was released in 1990, and another in 2020 starring Anne Hathaway, Chris Rock and Octavia Spencer.
