A first edition, first printing of ‘Mary Poppins’ by P L Travers, published by Gerald Howe in 1934. A very good book without inscriptions, standing square and firm with the dark blue topstain complete and unblemished – some tape burns to the illustrated endpapers and some darkening to the edges and wear to the corners. Wear to the extremities. In a dust wrapper which has some restorative repair to the spine and top of the front and rear panels. Some wear to the folds and a small closed tear to the rear fold.

P. L. Travers’ ‘Mary Poppins,’ first published in 1934, has had a profound and enduring impact on global culture. The beloved character of Mary Poppins, a magical nanny who brings order and wonder into the lives of the Banks family, has become an iconic figure in literature, film, and theatre. The novel’s exploration of imagination, whimsy, and the importance of family resonated with audiences world-wide, transcending generations. Its themes of kindness, adventure, and the power of imagination continue to captivate readers of all ages.

The book’s adaptation into the classic 1964 Disney film starring Julie Andrews further solidified its place in popular culture, earning critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including five Academy Awards. The film’s timeless songs, such as ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee,’ have become cultural touchstones. Additionally, the success of the film led to various stage adaptations, ensuring that Mary Poppins’ magic continues to enchant audiences on Broadway and beyond. The book has left an indelible mark on global culture, inspiring countless adaptations and continuing to enchant audiences with its message of hope, imagination, and the power of love.”

The UK first edition of Mary Poppins is exceedingly scarce. Gerald Howe published this a year before Lovat Dickson produced the follow-up by Travers, ‘Mary Poppins Comes Back’.
