MANDELA, Nelson (1918–2013). Autograph and signed portrait presentation, 1996.

A presentation comprising a reproduction pen-and-ink portrait of Nelson Mandela, signed and dated by the sitter (“Nelson Mandela 96”), together with a separate hand-signed autograph in black ink on card, mounted alongside an official typed letter from the Office of the President, Union Buildings, Pretoria, dated 25 July 1996. The letter acknowledges receipt of correspondence and notes that “enclosed are the autographed drawings, with the President’s compliments.”

The elements are attractively mounted and framed as a single display – measuring 54cm x 43cm.

An appealing and well-documented presentation dating from Mandela’s presidency, the accompanying official letter providing clear contemporary provenance for the signatures. Material issued directly from the Office of the President during this formative period of South Africa’s post-apartheid history is increasingly sought after, particularly where, as here, it combines autograph material with a signed likeness of one of the most significant political figures of the twentieth century.

Complete with a letter from the original owner discussing the signature.
