First edition, first printing. Published by Collins Harvill in London, 1967. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, carrying its fabulous design by Alex Jawdokimov, has some slight rubbing at the top and tail edges. There are three moderate closed tears at the corners, with the top left-hand being the exception. The rear panel is markedly bright. It has not been price clipped and shows the original 30s net price. The boards, in the original publisher’s green buckram, are slightly bumped at the spine tips. The text blocks are so slightly foxed at the top and side edges. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is, overall, in near fine condition.
Written in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940 during Stalin’s regime. A censored version, with several chapters cut by editors, was published in Moscow magazine in 1966–1967, after the writer’s death, by his widow.
