First edition, first printing of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, published by Collins Harvill, London in 1967. A near fine copy free from internal inscriptions, with slight fading to the head of the spine, toning and shelf wear to top edge of text block, with crease to front free end paper and former retailers label to front paste down. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with fading to the spine and light toning throughout. Jacket design by Alex Jawdokimov.

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, was written in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940 during Stalin’s regime. A censored version, with several chapters cut by editors, was published in Moscow magazine in 1966–1967, after the writer’s death, by his widow. It was published posthumously in 1967 and is a surreal, satirical masterpiece blending fantasy, romance and political critique. The Devil, disguised as Professor Woland, arrives in Soviet Moscow with a bizarre entourage, exposing hypocrisy and corruption. Parallel to this unfolds the story of the Master, a writer, and Margarita, his devoted lover, who defies all for him. Interwoven with a retelling of Christ and Pilate, the novel explores truth, love and redemption.
