First edition, first printing of Eating People Is Wrong by Malcolm Bradbury, published by Secker & Warburg in London, 1959. This is a very good copy, the text blocks with minor browning, a previous owner’s inscription in blue ink to the front free end paper and former retailer’s label to front paste-down. The near fine unclipped dust wrapper with some fading to the spine, chipping to the spine tips and to the upper knuckle of the rear flap fold, some handling wear to the rear panel. Wrapper designed by Donald Green.

Eating People Is Wrong by Malcolm Bradbury is a satirical novel set in a British university, exploring academia’s eccentricities and societal hypocrisies. It follows Professor Treece, a disillusioned and neurotic academic, as he grapples with his declining influence, unrequited love and his students’ absurd antics. The novel humorously critiques human pretensions, moral ambiguities and the challenges of post-war intellectual life. Bradbury’s sharp wit and keen observation make it a timeless exploration of human frailty and societal norms.

Bradbury’s first campus novel, preceding The History Man by sixteen years.
