London Cape 1962

Original printed wrappers. Pp. 214. Wrappers slightly creased and rubbed. Pages nice and clean with slight creasing to the edges. A very good copy. Very scarce. [WITH] LAWRENCE, A.W EDITS: LETTERS TO T. E. LAWRENCE: Jonathan Cape, 1962. Octavo. Original beige buckram gilt. Dustwrapper. Pp. 216. Slight fading to the cloth and very minor foxing to the first two and last two blanks. A near fine, tight, clean copy in very near fine dustwrapper which has a faint mark to the front panel.
Includes some of his letters from E. M. Forster, the first of which from February 1924 reads:
‘Have still about 20 chapters of your book (Seven Pillars) to read, but should like to start putting down a few notes on it. I think it’s a great affair, and am much obliged to you for allowing me to read it. I told Sassoon, also Mrs Hardy, how much I liked it, and won’t go on to you, because you probably prefer criticisms, tips. I will try and send some, on the faint chance of their helping you.’ The letter goes on: ‘The criticism I’d offer is that your reflective style is not properly under control. Almost at once, when you describe your thoughts, you become obscure, and the slightly strained sense which you then (not habitually) lend words, does not bring your sentence the richness you intended, imparts not colour but gumminess’.

Another letter from Forster ends: ‘Well I’ll knock off now – unless I hear to the contrary I shall hand back the O.E. (Oxford Edition) of the Seven Pillars to Wilson within two months of writing this letter – Good night!’

This work is a fascinating resource for any serious student of T. E. Lawrence’s life and work.
