A first edition, first printing of ‘The Go-Between’ by L. P. Hartley, published by Hamish Hamilton, London in 1953. A near fine book free from internal inscriptions, boards bound in publishers original crimson cloth with gilt titling to the spine, binding slightly cocked, single bump to top edge of front board, pushing to upper corner of front board, light rubbing to the crimson top stain of text block with heavy foxing to the fore-edge and bottom edge, a Book Society bookplate to the front free end paper, foxing to the preliminaries. In a very good unclipped wrapper with chipping and losses to spine tips, chipping to knuckles of front and rear flap folds, fading to the spine, a triangular open tear to lower edge of rear panel. Jacket design by Biro.

The Go-Between by L. P. Hartley is a coming-of-age novel framed through memory. It follows Leo Colston, who as a boy visits a wealthy school friend’s country estate in 1900. There, he becomes an unwitting messenger between Marian, his friend’s sister, and her secret lover, Ted, a tenant farmer. Innocence collides with class boundaries and forbidden desire, leaving Leo scarred by betrayal and disillusionment. The novel explores memory, repression and the loss of childhood innocence.
