A first edition, first printing of The Log from the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck, published by Heinemann, London in 1958. A near fine book without inscriptions, former retailer’s sticker to front paste-down, rubbing to the spine tips and ghosting to the spine, toning and spotting to the text block, spotting to preliminaries. In a very good price clipped wrapper with chipping to the spine tips, a closed tear to the upper hinge of rear panel, chipping to the knuckles of front and rear flap folds, spotting and toning throughout, surface damage and shelf wear to front panel, spotting and damp-staining internally.

The Log from the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck is a non-fiction account of a 1940 marine expedition Steinbeck took with biologist Ed Ricketts along the Gulf of California. Blending science, philosophy and travel narrative, the book records their search for marine specimens and reflections on humanity, nature and interconnection. Part journal, part essay, it reveals Steinbeck’s deep respect for the natural world and showcases his thoughtful, often poetic observations on life, science and friendship.
