First edition, first printing of ‘A Spaniard in the Works’. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1965. This is a very good copy. Issued without the dust wrapper, the pictorial paper-covered boards are slightly worn at the corners and spine tips, with some lifting to the laminate on the front and rear hinges. There is an erased small previous owner’s name to the pastedown. The text blocks are bright and clean throughout.
The book consists of nonsensical stories and drawings similar to the style of his previous book, 1964’s In His Own Write. The name is a pun on the expression “a spanner in the works”.
