John Glenn was an American Marine Corps pilot, astronaut, and U.S. senator. In 1962, he became the first American to orbit Earth aboard Friendship 7, earning national acclaim during the Space Race. After leaving NASA, he served four terms as a senator from Ohio, focusing on science and public service. In 1998, Glenn returned to space on the Space Shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to fly in space and inspiring generations world-wide of exploration.
