First edition, first printing. Published by Hodder and Stoughton in London, 1941. This is a very good (or better) copy. The dust wrapper, designed by Bip Pares, has some tearing at the spine tips and the corners. It is beautifully illustrated, with Pares’ etching bright and present. It has not been price clipped and shows an 8/3 net price on the front flap. The reverse of the wrapper is slightly spotted. The spine is sunned. The boards are mostly free from notable wear, though bumped at the top and tail of the spine. There is a neat previous owners inscription to the front flap, reading ‘Joe, from Kitty’. The text blocks are notably foxed throughout. Overall, this is a very good (or better) copy of a stunning title.
Sir Edward Leithen is diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis and given a year to live. While he is deciding how to spend his remaining days, an American associate, John S. Blenkiron, requests help to find his niece’s husband, Francis Galliard, who has disappeared from his very successful financial career in New York and fled to Canada.
