J.R.R Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings – All First Edition, First Printings – Original Unrestored Dust Wrappers

A set of first edition, first printings of Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’, published by George Allen and Unwin between 1954-55. Comprising: [1] The Fellowship of the Ring – one of 3000 first state copies; [2] The Two Towers – one of 3250 first state copies; [3] The Return of the King – one of 7000 copies, with signature mark ‘4’ present on page 49 and sagging text to ‘Legolas’. Originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond (The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11). All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto. Original dust wrappers which have not been price-clipped and with no restoration. No inscriptions whatsoever within each of the three volumes. The set has been collated individually.
The condition of each volume follows: (1) The Fellowship of the Ring: A first edition, first printing published in 1954. A very good book with fading and wear to the spine – no inscriptions. Red topstain present and complete. Map to the rear is present and has tape burns to the top corner. Off-setting to the endpapers – light stain to the foot of the page block. In the very good (or better) dust wrapper which is unclipped showing 21s as called for. A small internal repair to a closed tear to the foot of the spine and one to the top edge. Some light wear to the spine tips and corners.
(2) The Two Towers: A first edition, first printing published in 1954. A very good book with fading and some staining to the boards. No inscriptions – spotting and off-setting to the endpapers. Topstain present and complete. Wear to the board edges and corners. Map to the rear present and complete. In the very good (or better) dust wrapper which is complete with a couple of very light stains to the top of the spine – some rubbing to the corners. Not price clipped showing 21s as called for.
(3) The Return of the King: A first edition, first printing published in 1955. A near fine book without inscriptions – some off-setting to the endpapers. A little rubbing to the edges and corners. Map is present to the rear of the book. In the very good (or better) dust wrapper which is unclipped showing 21st as called for. Two small internal repairs to closed tears to the bottom edge. Some rubbing to the spine and to the corners.
A very good set of the first edition, first printings, now housed in a custom-made slipcase showing the Eye of Sauron.
