First edition, first printing. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, 1955. This is a near fine copy. The dust wrapper, designed by Kenneth Lewis, is slightly toned throughout, though remaining altogether vibrant having enjoyed some restorative repair to the spine tips and corners and to the spine itself. It has not been price clipped, showing ‘10s. 6d. net’ to both flaps. The publisher’s black boards, with the titles to the front panel and spine in silver gilt, are in near fine condition, with sharp corners. The text blocks are clear of foxing to the top and side blocks. One of two variant states, printed on thicker paper stock and with the word “shoot” on page 10 correctly printed. The entire first impression (containing both “shoot” and “shoo” states) was issued on 7 April 1955. This copy one small name to the front endpaper and is, overall, in near fine condition.
The third title in Ian Fleming’s James Bond series.
