A first edition, first printing of ‘Live and Let Die’ published by Cape in 1954. A FINE book – the gilt lettering to the spine, and the gold medallion to the front panel are bright and free of fading. Internally, the book has no inscriptions whatsoever and is exceptionally fresh with no foxing or spotting to the text block. A beautiful example. The dust wrapper is not price clipped showing 10s 6d to the front flap and bears the artist’s acknowledgement below the blurb (Gilbert’s Third State). Below this, the dust wrapper artist, Kenneth Lewis has signed his name. Some light retouching to the spine tips and knuckles. Rear panel is beautifully clean. Presents as fine.
Kenneth Lewis was a British painter and illustrator known for his work in book cover design, including artwork for mid-20th century publications and genre fiction. His style combined strong composition with commercial clarity. Ian Fleming was the British author who created James Bond, publishing his first novel ‘Casino Royale’ in 1953. Fleming’s spy novels blended Cold War politics, glamour and action, creating one of the most successful and influential thriller series in modern publishing history.
