Henry Miller – Black Spring – First Edition 1936
£675.00
A first edition, first printing of Black Spring by Henry Miller, published by The Obelisk Press, 338 Rue Saint-Honoré, Paris in 1936. A near fine book free from internal inscriptions, browning to spine with chipping to head and open tears to foot, central crease to spine with some evidence of damp-staining, browning deckle edged text block, soft covers very lightly rub worn with Obelisk Press 60 Francs price ticket on front flap fold and similarly to rear panel, the pictorial front panel illustrated by M. J. Kahane. In accompanying handmade beige clothbound clamshell box, constructed in quarter morocco leather with raised bands to the spine, gilt titling to spine giving title, author and date of publication, with marbled paper lined interior to wraparound internal slipcase.
Black Spring by Henry Miller is a collection of autobiographical short stories that blend surrealism, vivid imagery and stream-of-consciousness writing. Published in 1936, the book delves into Miller’s early experiences in Brooklyn, capturing the grit and chaos of urban life. Through a mix of philosophical musings and raw, poetic language, Miller explores themes of identity, alienation and artistic creation, making Black Spring a compelling and introspective journey into the human psyche.
