A first edition, first printing of An Aspidistra in Babylon by H.E. Bates, published by Michael Joseph, London, in 1960. This is a near fine copy, signed and dated by the author on the front free end paper in blue ink, with slight fading and pushing to the foot of the spine, the boards free from notable chips and marks, the internals with ghosting to the front free end paper, title page and rear end paper, the text blocks with some browning and mild spotting. The unclipped wrapper with internal browning, spotting and minor stains, with chipping and external browning to the front and rear knuckle folds and head and foot of the spine, with browning to the upper edge of rear panel and rear flap and spine. Wrapper designed by Freda Nichols.
An Aspidistra in Babylon by H. E. Bates portrays the struggle of a young couple, George and Ellen, against societal expectations and financial constraints. Set in post-war England, they navigate the complexities of marriage and ambition while grappling with the realities of limited resources. The titular aspidistra plant becomes a symbol of their aspirations and the compromises they must make to pursue their dreams. Bates delicately explores themes of class, love and resilience in this poignant novella.
