£400.00

A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1930. Bound in the original blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine, publisher’s device stamped in blind on lower board. Very good internally, some spotting to the prelims with ex-libris plate of the Book Society to the front pastedown. Included is the Heinemann publishers advance review slip laid in, requesting no formal review until the date of publication (Oct. 6th). Greene became deeply disenchanted with his second novel, and as such the book appears in no other editions or reprints than the present example and the first American edition. According to Wobbe, the author remarked that “the title… suggested to him by Clemence Dane, is the only part of the novel he approves of”.
