First edition, first printing of ‘The End of the Affair’. Published by Heinemann in London, 1951. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper has some spotting and toning to the panels, with very minor handling marks also present. It has not been price clipped, showing the original 10s 6d net price. The original publisher’s grey cloth is free from notable wear, but with one small spot of sunning to the top of the spine. The internals are not foxed though with the usual toning due to poor paper stock. It is free from previous owner’s ink. The text blocks are clean throughout. There is some foxing to the page edges. Overall, this is a very good copy of a fine work of literature.
The basis for two big screen adaptations, produced in 1955 and 1999 respectively. Set in London during and just after the Second World War, the novel examines the obsessions, jealousy and discernments within the relationships between three central characters: writer Maurice Bendrix; Sarah Miles; and her husband, civil servant Henry Miles.
