First edition, first printing of The English People by George Orwell, published by Collins, London in 1947. A very good book with former owner’s signature and date in black ink on the front free end paper, with some pushing to the head of the spine and rubbing to the foot, the front board in general good condition with slight rubbing to the lower corner, the text block clean throughout with browning to the top edge. The very good unclipped wrapper with fading to the spine, bumping to the head and foot of the spine with minor chips to the knuckles of the front and rear panel folds, some internal browning and spotting.

The English People is an essay by George Orwell, exploring the complex characteristics and social dynamics of the English populace. Published in 1947, Orwell delves into the nuances of English identity, class structures and cultural quirks. He scrutinises English attitudes towards class, tradition and individualism, offering astute observations on the national psyche. Orwell’s sharp analysis dissects the contradictions and stereotypes surrounding the English, providing insight into their customs, values and the underlying tensions within English society.
