Description
A first edition, first printing ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ published by Secker and Warburg in 1949. A very good book with some light fading to the boards and a little spotting to the endpapers and page edges. No inscriptions and internally clean.
In the maroon, unclipped wrapper, designed by Michael Kennard, which has benefitted from some restorative repair to the spine and edges and now presents well.
Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published in 1949, almost simultaneously in Britain and the United States. The British first edition appeared on 8 June 1949 from Secker & Warburg, Orwell’s long-time publisher, while Harcourt, Brace & Company issued the American edition five days later. Both printings reflected wartime paper shortages, resulting in modest production quality.
